West Virginia gubernatorial special election, 2011

While I'm still excited about learning politics, I decided to look into my home state of West Virginia and see if anything was going on there. Turns out there is a special election this year in October for governor. The first candidate I read about was Democrat Earl Ray Tomblin. Here are some questions I would ask him.

My issues

Being new to this whole thing, I thought it important to try to get some of my own important issues down on paper so that I could start comparing them against candidates.

• To me, people are people. Equality despite religion, race, or sexual orientation is very important to me. I do not like Herman Cain's track record of discrimination against Muslims, for instance. I also strongly support gay marriage. 
• Education is really the backbone of tomorrow's economy. Teachers do not get paid enough and far too many kids drop out of high school. The cost of higher education has risen something like 900% since the 70s. I have absolutely no solutions, but I'm very interested in learning more about candidates who have a desire to improve the state of our nation's educational goals.
• I am pro-choice.
• I believe the Three Strikes rule needs reform.

I'll have to come back and add more to the list later. I'm not really sure what else to add! I know I have a lot of unpopular views, and honestly, I don't even know where I fit in politically.

The final candidate in the Kentucky gubernatorial race is Gatewood Galbraith. This man is as unusual as his name. I've really enjoyed learning more about him. Here are some questions I would ask him.




I still have no idea who I would ultimately vote for, even if I managed to get all my affairs in order in time to even be allowed to vote. But I am definitely still working on that. I also need to start making a list of things I need to do so that I can get registered.

Steve Beshear, Kentucky governor candidate

I think a good place for me to start is with the Governor of the state in which I currently reside- Kentucky. I haven't lived here very long, and my husband is active duty Army, so there's no telling how long we'll stay.

It's never too late

I've never had an interest in politics. As a matter of fact, I've never even voted. I'm quite embarrassed of that fact and have never actually admitted it to anyone. Of course my husband knows, but that's it. I am a 37-year-old housewife who is completely sheltered from all things political and have never voted. Whew! Is that a load off my chest!

I want to change that. I want to become involved. I want to do my part in serving my country. Hopefully, this blog can help track my progress in this endeavor.
